Mr. Da Silva was accorded a guard of honour complimented by the tunes of the national anthem of the Portuguese Republic played by the Republic of Fiji Military Force band.

The appointment further strengthens Fiji and Portugal’s 42nd year of diplomatic relations. His Excellency the President of Fiji was pleased to note Fiji and Portugal’s common growing interest in a range of areas, particularly the surrounding oceans and climate change among many others that both have conspicuously shown global leadership in.
Climate change has seemingly become a controversial issue in the globe. The President of Fiji thanked Portugal and the EU for its resounding vote of confidence in Fiji’s Presidency of COP23 in Bonn.
The President then commended and congratulated Portugal in their commitment to become carbon neutral by 2050, a goal Fiji similarly shares.
The ceremony was sealed with the gift exchange between their Excellencies.
